(CBS Sports) – LSU has fired coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.
Ross Dellenger of the Baton Rouge Advocate first reported the firings, and LSU confirmed them on Sunday evening.
“Decisions like this are never easy ones to make,” said LSU athletic director Joe Alleva in a release announcing Miles’ dismissal. “Coach Miles has done a tremendous job here and he’s been a great ambassador for our University, which makes this even more difficult.
“However, it’s apparent in evaluating the program through the first month of the season that a change has to be made. Our commitment to excellence and competing at the highest level is unwavering, and our goals for the remainder of this season haven’t changed. We have an obligation to our student-athletes to put them in the best position to have success on the football field each week and we have great confidence that coach [Ed] Orgeron will do just that.”
And just like that the Mad Hatter is out in Baton Rouge.
This is one of those surprised but not shocked situations. The rumors have been swirling around Les for a while now. I honestly thought they should have let him go after last year. Especially if he was going to be on such a short leash for this year.
In the end it was the same old story that did Les in, great talent, good defense and running game, but abysmal play from the quarterback position. And he oddly just never addressed that.
If he wants, Im sure he will have his choice of jobs in the off season. Could even be from the team that beat him last night to force LSU to pull the trigger on this firing today. Time will tell but I dont think we have seen the last of Les.
