For Today Only, ESPNU Will Become ESPN 8 The Ocho

(ESPN Media Zone) – Drawing inspiration from the 2004 hit movie “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” featuring Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller, ESPNU will become ESPN8: “The Ocho” on Tuesday, Aug. 8, or more appropriately, 8/8.  For one day only, the faux network will feature a line-up of unconventional sporting events ranging from Disc Golf to Ultimate Trampoline Dodgeball and Firefighters World Challenge playing off the mantra highlighted in the movie: “Bringing you the Finest in Seldom Seen Sports”.

Im honestly surprised it took ESPN this long to make this happen.  Seems like an absolute no brainer, even if it is 13 years late.  I pray that its a huge hit and becomes a regular thing.  I have no idea what Kabaddi or the Moxie Games are, but cant wait to find out.

Also, dont want, but NEED Cotton McKnight and Pepper Brooks to announce something.

ESPN Making Huge Cuts, Lays Off 100 People

The news of massive cuts at ESPN started rolling in this morning.

And then kept on rolling in throughout the day.

And there were many others.  Look it sucks to lose your job, especially when you didnt see it coming, which Im guessing at least a few of these people didnt.  So best of luck to all those that got the boot today.

A bold move by a company that seems unsure of where its going.  ESPN is still the Worldwide Leader In Sports, but is definitely not the untouchable juggernaut it used to be not all that long ago.

Spending billions on live sports rights over the next few years, and with flops like the Longhorn Network, and continually dropping subscriber numbers, it will be interesting to see how/if ESPN can adapt and what they will look like in 5 years.

ESPN Anchor Britt McHenry Rips Lady At Tow Truck Company A New One

Noooot a good look here for Brit.

Did she go a little overboard here in the things she said?  Sure

Is she going to get blasted for this on the Internet?  Absolutely

But I think we can all agree that getting your car towed is at the top of the list of most annoying things in life.  And sometimes you just gotta blow off some steam, and sometimes that means yelling at someone that probably doesnt deserve it.  But thats how it works.  i dont make the rules.

**Update** – ESPN has released a statement and suspended Britt for a week.  She also sent the following apology on twitter:

In an intense and stressful moment, I allowed my emotions to get the best of me and said some insulting and regrettable things. As frustrated as I was, I should always choose to be respectful and take the high road. I am so sorry for my actions and will learn from this mistake.

Dont think she should have been suspended, but ESPN figures they had to do something or the backlash for not doing anything would be worse.

And typical canned apology from her, what she will learn from this is to make sure the camera isnt rolling when you tear someone a new asshole

Dick Vitale Will Not Call North Carolina Vs Duke Game For First Time In 35 Years

(Via SB Nation) – When Duke and North Carolina rekindle college basketball’s best rivalry on Wednesday night, the game will have a distinctly different sound. That’s because for the first time in 36 years, Dick Vitale wont be on the call

Vitale had been part of the broadcasting team for every game between Duke and North Carolina since joining ESPN in 1979. In recent years, Vitale has been been part of a three-man booth with Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas, who will call the game without him on Wednesday.

Big UNC fan here, and also a big Dickie V fan, and this game will without a doubt have a different feel to it without him on the sideline.

Shulman and Bilas are great broadcasters and more than capable, but no one brings the unbridled enthusiasm and energy like Dickie V.  Even if hes just screaming for the sake of it and may not know exactly what hes talking about.  He always keeps it SUPER, SCINTILLATING, SENSATIONAL!

Dude is 75 years old, and this may be ESPNs slow start of phasing him out, since his contract is up in a couple of years.  Maybe not, but either way you know deep down this one hurts him a little.

Daniel Tosh Calls Out ESPN For Ripping Off His Material

Hes got a point here, ESPN did totally rip his idea, and just gave it a very uncreative name.  You would think the “World Wide Leaders” could be a little more original.

And Tosh’s fake Sports Science segment is dead on, ESPN just throws so much crap at you now its unreal.

Dont get me wrong, I still watch ESPN and Sportscenter all the time, but thats only because Ive been trained that way after years and years of it, plus noone else has stepped up to really compete with them.  Its baffling really how they have become the 800 pound gorilla and noone can touch them.

Guess thats how they can get away with this kind of stuff.
